Loch Peatlig

The water here is startlingly dark, almost black when the light catches it wrong. Loch Peatlig sits quiet in the Sutherland landscape - not dramatic, not Instagram-ready, just genuinely remote. You'll find it if you're driving through the far northwest and decide to deviate from the main road, which most people don't.

What you get is a proper Highlands loch without the crowds that plague Loch Ness or Loch Morar. The shoreline is rocky and rough, trees bend in from the sides, and on a clear day the ridges of the surrounding hills feel close enough to touch. There's no visitor centre, no facilities, no heritage board telling you what you're looking at. Just water, moorland, and the kind of silence that makes you realise how much noise there usually is.

Walkers and landscape photographers will actually find time here worthwhile - the loch sits within terrain that rewards a few hours of exploration on foot. Families with very young children might find it a bit bleak; there's nowhere to sit down properly and nothing to actually do except look. That's partly the point.

Clachtoll Beach Campsite is less than six miles away if you're basing yourself in the area. It's a good spot to combine with proper walks in North West Sutherland - this loch works best as a side trip rather than a destination in itself. Go if solitude appeals to you. Skip it if you need an experience that's been package-tested and made accessible.
