Loch na Laimh

The water here is so still on a calm day that you can't tell where the loch ends and the sky begins. Loch na Laimh sits just outside Lochgilphead in Argyll, a proper quiet spot that most tourists miss entirely while they're chasing the more famous lochs further north.

It's a small freshwater loch - you won't be doing any major water sports or hiring boats here. What you get instead is a decent walk around the shoreline, some decent fishing if that's your thing, and the kind of peace you rarely find near a town. The surrounding woodland gives it a sheltered feel, even when the wind picks up across the wider landscape.

Walkers will find the most value in this one. Give yourself an hour for a full circuit if you're not in a hurry, longer if you want to sit and actually notice things. It's the sort of place that rewards you for being slow. Kids might get restless after thirty minutes unless they're properly into spotting birds or skimming stones - it's not a playground situation.

Stay at Lochgilphead Caravan Park just down the road and you've got easy access without the crowds. The Pod Over By, five miles away, is worth considering too if you want something with a bit more character. Both parks sit well for exploring this quieter part of Argyll. Visit early morning or late afternoon when the light's best and you've got the place to yourself.
