Loch McKay

The water here is properly dark and still, reflecting the hills around it in a way that makes you wonder why this corner of Argyll doesn't get more attention. Loch McKay sits quiet and unassuming, the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think - a rare thing these days.

It's a straightforward freshwater loch, ideal for a morning walk or a lazy afternoon if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks around Lochgilphead. The shoreline gives you plenty of room to wander, and there are decent views across the water towards the surrounding hills. Birdwatchers tend to find their way here, and you'll spot the occasional fisherman casting from the banks. It's not going to set your pulse racing, but that's rather the point.

The lack of touristy infrastructure means it feels genuinely untouched. No cafes, no visitor centre, no ticket booths - just water, grass, and the occasional walker. Allow an hour or so for a proper circuit if you're keen, or simply park up for twenty minutes if you're passing through between other Argyll attractions.

Stay at Lochgilphead Caravan Park, three miles away, and you've got easy access here plus proximity to the wider region. The Pod Over By, rated exceptionally, sits a bit further out but offers something more unusual if you want a break from standard caravan park facilities. Either way, Loch McKay works best as part of a longer Argyll exploration rather than a standalone destination.
