Loch Leven National Nature Reserve - Pier Entrance

The pier at Loch Leven is where most people start their walk around this vast freshwater loch, and for good reason - it gives you instant access to the water's edge without mucking about finding parking in Kinross town centre. The loch itself is genuinely impressive, stretching away north with hills rising beyond, and on a clear day the light catches the water in that particular Scottish way that makes you understand why people bother living up here.

It's a proper walking destination rather than a quick tick-box stop. The circuit round the loch takes about two hours at a reasonable pace, though you needn't do the full loop - plenty of folk just walk the northern stretch and head back. Birdwatchers make a pilgrimage here, especially in winter when whooper swans and geese arrive, but even if you couldn't tell a mallard from a moorhen you'll spot things moving on the water. The reserve is free to access, which is refreshing.

Families with primary-aged kids will manage the pier walk fine, though the full circuit demands decent boots and concentration - it's not rambling-club gentle. Winter can be muddy; spring brings the birds back. If you're camping at Gallowhill, just down the road, or treating yourself to Wild Goose Glamping further out, this becomes your morning expedition before coffee. Worth the detour if you're serious about walking, less so if you're after five minutes of scenery and a gift shop.
