Carnbo

The earthworks at Carnbo are what remain of a Roman fort, though calling it a 'site' might oversell things a bit. You're looking at grass-covered humps and ditches that once formed the perimeter of a military stronghold - visible enough if you know what you're looking for, but hardly dramatic. It sits just outside Kinross, in gently rolling Fife countryside, and frankly works best as a detour rather than a destination in itself.

This is a spot for Roman history enthusiasts or archaeology types who don't mind reading between the lines - literally between the turf lines. The earthworks tell a story if you've got the context, but a casual visitor might walk past without realising what they're seeing. Allow twenty minutes tops, unless you're the kind who brings proper field notes.

What makes it worthwhile is combining Carnbo with a broader park-based holiday in the area. Base yourself at Gallowhill Caravan & Camping Park or Fossoway Cabins, both within three and a half miles, and you've got a genuine Roman history angle to weave into your break. The surrounding countryside is pleasant for walking, and Kinross itself offers the usual facilities without being overwhelming.

Go on a dry day - muddy grassland defeats the purpose. Spring or autumn suits best, when the light catches the earthworks differently and you're not fighting summer crowds (small as they are). It's free, it requires no booking, and it answers a very specific itch for those interested in Fife's Roman past. Don't expect interpretation boards or facilities. Just uneven ground and a sense of what was once strategically important.
