Bellfield

The ruins at Bellfield sit quietly in the Fife landscape, a proper slice of Scottish archaeology that most visitors to the area completely walk past. This is a Bronze Age settlement - we're talking thousands of years old - and what remains are the low stone foundations of roundhouses that once sheltered Iron Age communities. It's not dramatic, and it won't leave you gasping. But if you're into that sort of thing, if you want to stand where people actually lived and worked centuries before Romans showed up, it's worth the effort.

From Kinross, it's an easy drive out, and the site itself sits amid farmland - open to the elements, free to visit, no ticket office or café in sight. You'll need maybe thirty to forty minutes here, longer if you're the type to sit down and really think about it all. The setting's quite windswept and honest, which somehow makes it feel more real than somewhere prettied up and roped off.

Families with older kids who can read a bit of history will get more from it than toddlers will. Serious archaeology nerds will love the chance to see the actual ground plans. It works well as a stop on a wider Fife walk - combine it with a stay at one of the nearby parks like Gallowhill or Meadow View Glamping, and you've got a proper day out that's off the usual tourist trail.
