Loch Glow

The water here is properly luminescent when the light hits it right - that's what draws people to Loch Glow, just outside Kinross in Fife. It's a small loch, nothing vast, but there's something about the way it catches the sun that makes it stand out from the dozen other lochs you'll pass on a Scottish drive. The name does most of the work for you.

You can walk the shoreline without too much fuss, though the path isn't manicured - this is the Scottish outdoors, mud and bracken included. Photographers turn up at golden hour chasing that luminous quality the loch's known for, and they're not wrong to bother. It takes maybe 45 minutes to an hour if you amble round properly, longer if you're setting up a tripod.

Families with young kids will find it pleasant enough for a short stop between bigger attractions, though there's not loads to do beyond looking and walking. Serious walkers might press on to other Tayside spots - it's more a pause than a destination in itself. The real value comes if you're based at one of the nearby parks like Meadow View Glamping or Fossoway Cabins, where it makes a cracking evening walk before dinner.

Free access, no visitor centre or facilities that I could find - bring what you need. Spring and autumn give the best light, though locals say the loch's worth seeing in any season. Honestly, if you're in the area already, it's worth the detour. If you're travelling specifically for it, manage your expectations.
