Loch Fada

The water here is proper dark, reflecting the moorland slopes that rise steeply on either side. Loch Fada sits in the heart of Sutherland's wilder country, where the landscape feels genuinely remote - no crowds, no visitor centre, just you and the loch.

If you're after a quick leg-stretch and water views, allow forty minutes to an hour. Families with younger kids might find it a bit of a slog - there's no obvious path or facilities, so you're committing to a genuine walk rather than a casual stroll.

Historywise, there's little here to detain you. The real appeal is solitude and the landscape itself. It fits well into a wider exploration of Sutherland's lochs and moorland - pair it with a base at Clachtoll Beach Campsite, just five miles away, and you've got access to some genuinely quiet Highland terrain. Go in summer when daylight stretches long and the weather's less likely to turn foul. Winter visits are possible but the paths become treacherous and the light fails early.
