About Loch Arail
The loch itself is decent for a walk round - takes a couple of hours if you're not rushing - with decent paths and views back towards the Argyll countryside. Fishermen come here, which tells you the water's clean enough and there's something worth catching. You might spot herons or the odd osprey if you're lucky and quiet about it. It's not dramatic or showy, but that's rather the point.
If you're staying at Lochgilphead Caravan Park, it's close enough for a morning stroll or an evening walk when the light's going gold across the water. Kids won't find it thrilling - no playgrounds, no facilities that I could see, just a loch and paths - but if you want them to burn energy and get some proper fresh air, it works. Bring a packed lunch and make an afternoon of it.
There's no charge for access, which is refreshing. Go when the midges aren't fierce - that rules out July and August for most people. Spring or September are your best bets. Don't expect anything except a quiet corner of Argyll and time away from everything else. That's genuinely enough.
