Llyn y Fydlyn

Llyn y Fydlyn is a modest freshwater lake just outside Holyhead on Anglesey's western coast - the sort of place locals know well but visitors often miss entirely. There's nothing flashy about it. The water sits ringed by rough grassland and a few scraggly trees, with hills visible in the distance. You can walk round it in maybe forty minutes, though most people come for the fishing rather than the views.

It's genuinely peaceful, which counts for something if you're camping nearby at Pengraig or Llain Ffynnon. The walk's flat and easy enough for families with younger kids, though there's not much in the way of facilities - bring what you need. Walkers heading out from Holyhead sometimes use it as part of a longer route across the island, but it's not a destination in itself.

The lake works best as a break during a longer Anglesey trip rather than a reason to drive out specially. If you're fishing, that's different - locals seem to rate it for pike and perch. If you're just after a nice spot to stretch your legs between campsites, it'll do the job without pretending to be more than it is. The real draw of this corner of Anglesey is the coastal walks and Holyhead's harbour itself.
