Llyn Pen-y-parc

This small lake sits quietly on Anglesey's inland stretches, about twenty minutes from Beaumaris town centre - the sort of place you stumble upon rather than deliberately seek out. The water's calm most days, fringed with reeds and rough grassland that slopes down gently from the surrounding fields. It's not dramatic or showy. There's no café, no visitor centre, no facilities really. Just a lake doing what lakes do.

Walkers will find it worth a detour, particularly if you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks like Wonderfully Wild or Plas Yn Llangoed. The perimeter walk takes perhaps thirty to forty minutes at a leisurely pace - nothing strenuous, just honest countryside. Birdwatchers should bring binoculars; the place attracts various wildfowl depending on season. Children might enjoy it for twenty minutes, less if there's no bread for the ducks (which there won't be, so don't bother).

Free to visit, obviously. No gates, no admission desk. You simply turn up. Best in spring or early summer when the light sits nicely across the water in late afternoon, and the place feels properly peaceful rather than just empty. Winter can be bleak here - the wind comes straight off the sea.

If you're basing yourself at St. David's Park or somewhere similar for a week on Anglesey, this fills a quiet morning between bigger attractions. It won't blow your mind. That's rather the point.
