Mariandyrys North Wales Wildlife Trust nature reserve

The wetland at Mariandyrys is one of those quiet corners of Anglesey that locals know but most visitors miss. Run by the North Wales Wildlife Trust, it's a proper working nature reserve rather than a polished visitor attraction - muddy paths, reed beds, and if you're lucky, you'll spot curlews, redshanks, and overwintering wildfowl. The real appeal is the walk itself. You're basically wandering through marshland with binoculars, listening for birds rather than admiring manicured gardens.

It's genuinely excellent for birdwatchers and anyone who actually wants to see wildlife rather than just read about it. Families with young kids might find it a bit underwhelming unless they're already into nature spotting - there's no play area or cafe to break things up. The walks aren't strenuous, though, so it works fine for all ages if the weather's decent.

Beaumaris is just down the road, which means you can easily combine this with a beach visit or a wander round the castle. If you're staying at somewhere like Plas Yn Llangoed or Wonderfully Wild - both ridiculously close - you could knock this out as a morning activity. Free admission, naturally. Go early if you want the best chance of seeing birds, and don't expect anything to be signposted brilliantly. Bring decent binoculars and waterproof boots. It's the kind of place that justifies a longer stay on Anglesey rather than a quick tick-box visit.
