Llyn Padarn , Llanberis

Stand on the shores of this glacial lake and you're looking at one of Snowdonia's most dramatic backdrops. Llyn Padarn stretches nearly two miles beneath the towering bulk of the Dinorwig slate quarries, its dark waters reflecting the scarred mountainsides where generations of quarrymen once carved out the Welsh slate that roofed half of Britain. The lake sits right in the heart of Llanberis, making it incredibly accessible for a proper lakeside walk or just a quiet moment watching the light change on the water.

Families will find plenty to occupy them here - the level path around much of the shoreline is pushchair-friendly, and there's enough space for kids to burn off energy without disappearing into the wilderness. Walkers can tackle longer routes that link up with the surrounding hills, while anyone with an interest in industrial heritage will appreciate the dramatic quarry landscapes that loom above.

The lake works brilliantly as part of a Snowdonia break, particularly if you're staying at one of the nearby sites like Llanberis Touring Park or Bryn Gloch Caravan & Camping Park. It's a short drive from Caernarfon too, so you can easily combine it with other attractions. Early morning or late afternoon visits offer the best light for photos, and the reflections can be absolutely stunning when the wind drops.
