Llyn Eiddew Mawr Manganese Mine (disused)

A Victorian-era manganese mine high in the Gwynedd hills, now abandoned and slowly being reclaimed by Welsh moorland. You're picking your way through overgrown workings, rusty machinery, and stone structures that speak to serious industrial operation in what feels utterly remote today.

The mine itself is a proper scramble - expect uneven ground, unstable surfaces, and loose rock. Not somewhere to wander without care or suitable boots. What makes it worthwhile is the sheer incongruity of it all: this wasn't some picturesque slate quarry with visitor infrastructure, but a working concern that extracted manganese ore from 1868 onwards before being abandoned. The structures are still standing, the spoil heaps visible, and if you're into industrial archaeology rather than manicured heritage sites, there's genuine atmosphere here.

Historically-minded walkers will get the most from this. Kids under twelve will likely find it dull and potentially frustrating - there's no interpretation, no visitor centre, no clear paths. The nearest base is Talsarnau, and several caravan parks sit within five miles: Barcdy and Woodlands are closest, though you'll be doing fieldwork to actually explore the site properly.

Allow two to three hours if you're thorough. Go in dry weather - this hills get genuine rainfall and the ground turns boggy. It's free to visit but requires a decent walk uphill from where you can park, and honestly, you need to know what you're looking for. Not for everyone, but if industrial history moves you, the effort pays off.
