Llyn Bach

The water here sits absolutely still on a calm day - mirror-like and surrounded by the kind of Welsh hills that make you understand why people move to Gwynedd and never leave. Llyn Bach is a modest lake, nothing grandiose, tucked into the landscape near Porthmadog with genuine quiet to it.

It's the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think. The walk around it is gentle enough for families with young kids, though the terrain can be boggy depending on recent weather - wellies aren't a bad shout. The views pull in all directions: moorland, distant peaks, that particular shade of green you only get in North Wales. Worth allowing an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're in no rush and fancy stopping mid-way.

Historically minded visitors might find it atmospheric rather than packed with stories, but that's rather the point. This isn't a tourist trap. If you're staying at Glan-Y-Môr or Black Rock Sands (both within three miles), Llyn Bach makes a solid half-day outing, particularly if the beach weather turns sketchy. It pairs well with exploring Porthmadog itself, a proper little town with character.

The lake works best for walkers and photographers rather than families wanting high-energy activities. Children might find it peaceful rather than thrilling - a reflective spot rather than an adventure. No facilities to speak of, so bring a packed lunch and water. Go when cloud cover's light; the landscape changes completely depending on the sky.
