Little Hull Pot

A sinkhole that swallows a stream - that's Hull Pot in a nutshell, and it's one of those Yorkshire Dales oddities that stops you dead in your tracks. Water vanishes underground here, tumbling into a chasm that's part cave, part geology lesson, part bit of proper drama on the landscape. It's free to visit and takes maybe twenty minutes to have a good look around, though walkers often string it into something longer across the surrounding moorland.

You won't be crawling through passages or rappelling into darkness - this is a surface attraction, spectacular in its own right. The pot itself is a collapsed section of limestone where the stream has carved its way downwards over millennia. Stand at the edge and you're looking at raw Dales geology. It's the kind of thing that appeals to walkers keen on karst formations, families after something different from the usual park-and-stroll routine, and anyone who finds that intersection of water and stone genuinely fascinating.

Settle is the nearest proper town, about six miles south, and you've got solid glamping options nearby - Ribblesdale Pods is barely a mile away if you're after somewhere comfortable. The cave fits well into a wider Dales holiday, especially if you're combining walks around Settle or exploring Pen-y-Ghent. Go on a day when the stream's flowing well - drought months can make it less impressive. Winter and spring are your best bet for water volume. It's a genuine bit of landscape theatre, not everyone's cup of tea, but absolutely worth the detour if you're that way inclined.
