Little Crag

Little Crag sits just outside Ilkley, a proper fell that doesn't demand a full day's commitment but rewards the climb with views across Wharfedale that feel like you've earned them. It's a short, steep push up moorland - maybe thirty minutes at a reasonable pace - and you're on top with the grit beneath your boots and the Pennines rolling out in front of you.

The summit itself is modest: a rocky outcrop, nothing dramatic, but the walk up is what counts. The paths are well-trodden and straightforward enough that confident kids won't struggle, though the gradient means it's less of a gentle family stroll and more of an actual climb. Adults after a quick leg-stretcher on the way between Ilkley and Bolton Abbey will find it very much their thing.

Timing matters. Morning light hits differently up there, and you'll want to time it when Ilkley itself isn't choked with weekend day-trippers. The access is free - just turn up and walk. No visitor centre, no facilities, no fuss. That's either brilliant or frustrating depending on what you want.

If you're based at one of the local campsites - Olicana Park is barely two miles away, or Catgill Farm not much further - Little Crag works perfectly as a morning outing before heading down to explore Bolton Abbey Estate proper. It's the sort of walk that fills an hour and stays with you longer than the bigger, busier peaks.
