Little Combe Tor

The climb up Little Combe Tor from Tavistock side is steep but brief - twenty minutes at most if you're moving at a decent pace. What you get for the effort is a proper granite outcrop with views that stretch across Dartmoor in most directions, which honestly makes it worth the scramble.

It's not a dramatic peak in the alpine sense. The tor itself is modest, rough-edged granite that you can clamber around on without needing any climbing gear. The real appeal is the isolation and the sense that you've walked far enough to leave the easy trails behind. Walkers who know Dartmoor well tend to appreciate this one more than first-timers - it's not on every itinerary, which keeps it quieter than the famous tors nearer Postbridge.

Walking groups and serious hikers will get genuine satisfaction here. Families with young kids might find the scramble a bit much, though teenagers who like a bit of adventure will enjoy it. The ground underfoot is uneven moorland - bog in wetter months, so choose your season and watch your footing.

There's no visitor infrastructure at all - no car park, no signage, no facilities. You park in Tavistock and walk in via the moor, or approach from one of the nearby caravan parks like Woodovis or Lydford if you're staying put for a few days. The whole outing takes a couple of hours round trip. It's the kind of place you'll want clear weather for - cloud can descend fast up here and the landmarks disappear.
