Linn of Tummel Obelisk

Standing on the banks of the River Tummel just outside Pitlochry, this modest obelisk marks a spot that 18th-century landowners clearly thought rather important. It's a short walk from the town centre, tucked into woodland where the river narrows dramatically - the 'linn' being a waterfall or torrent, which is exactly what you get here.

The monument itself isn't much to look at, to be honest. A stone pillar commemorating something Victorian-era significant, but the real draw is the river setting. If you're hiking through Perthshire anyway, it's a straightforward detour rather than a destination in its own right. The river views are decent, and the walk from Pitlochry gives you proper woodland scenery without the slog of the longer trails.

You won't need more than 20 minutes here, 45 if you're making an afternoon of it with the walk in and out. It's free, as far as anyone can tell - no visitor centre, no facilities, just the stone and the water. Families with younger kids might find it a bit anticlimactic after the walk, but if you're already staying at Faskally Woods or Milton Of Fonab, it's a pleasant leg-stretcher between breakfast and wherever you're heading next.

Worth combining with other Pitlochry walks rather than visiting alone. The river itself is the main event here, not the monument.
