Linhope Spout Waterfall

The walk to Linhope Spout is deceptively modest - it's only about a mile up a gentle burn from the car park near Wooler, but the waterfall itself is proper worth the effort. You're walking through the Cheviots, so the landscape opens up quickly, and the sound of water gets louder as you approach. The falls themselves drop sharply into a narrow gorge, creating that moment where you round a bend and suddenly there it is - satisfying and immediate, rather than disappointingly small.

This is one for keen walkers and photographers rather than families with toddlers. The path is straightforward enough but involves a bit of scrambling near the top, and there's nothing in the way of facilities up there - no cafe, no visitor centre, just you and the water. Allow an hour there and back if you're moving at a decent pace. The best light comes from the north side of the gorge in the afternoon, which matters if you're serious about photos.

Based near Wooler, you're well positioned for a couple of days exploring the northern Cheviots. River Breamish Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite sits just down the valley and makes an excellent base - close enough that you could knock this walk out before breakfast if you fancied it. The waterfalls here don't have the drama of something like High Cup Nick further south, but they're free, accessible, and genuinely lovely without feeling like you're queuing behind a hundred others.
