Lingmoor Fell

The walk up Lingmoor Fell from Ambleside is a proper lung-buster, but the payoff is absolutely worth the climb. You're looking at roughly two hours up and back, following a steep path that winds through fell-side woodland before opening out onto moorland with views across the Lake District that'll make you forget how hard you've just worked.

It's not technically demanding - no scrambling, no exposure - which makes it ideal for reasonably fit families or anyone wanting a half-day fell experience without the commitment of something like the Old Man of Coniston. The path is clear and well-trodden. What you get at the top is a genuine sense of space and isolation despite being minutes from Ambleside's shops and cafes. On clear days the view across Great Langdale is genuinely outstanding, and you can pick out Windermere away to the east.

The nearby campsite options - particularly Great Langdale Glamping and Great Langdale Campsite, both under 1.2 miles away - make this an obvious pairing with a valley-based holiday. You could easily do this in the morning and spend the afternoon exploring the shops and restaurants back in Ambleside. Lakeside Retreat Glamping, four miles south, offers more comfort if you want a proper base with a higher standard of facilities.

Go early if you can. The fell gets busy on summer weekends, and the real magic happens when you've got the top mostly to yourself. Winter can be boggy underfoot after rain.
