Guards Wood

Walking into Guards Wood feels like stepping into something quieter than the Lake District's well-trodden peaks. This mixed woodland near Ambleside is the sort of place locals know and visitors often miss, which is precisely why it works so well. The forest floor is soft underfoot - moss and leaf litter - with mature trees creating dappled shade even on bright days. It's proper walking country, but nothing dramatic. You're looking at perhaps an hour or two depending on which paths you take, moving through oak and spruce with views opening occasionally toward the fells beyond.

The appeal is straightforward. If you're basing yourself at one of the nearby campsites - Skelwith Fold or Low Wray are closest, both just over 4 miles away - this is the kind of walk that breaks up a rainy afternoon or fills a quieter morning before heading to Windermere or Langdale. Families with young walkers will manage it fine, though it's not the scenic knockout that draws crowds to Catrigg Force or Stock Ghyll. What it offers instead is peace and space without needing to book or plan around opening hours.

There's no visitor centre, no café, no entry fee - just woodland. Bring decent waterproofs; these Cumbrian forests can feel damp even when it's technically not raining. It's worth combining with Ambleside town itself, or using it as an easy warm-up before tackling some of the bigger walks in Great Langdale. Not a destination in itself, but a proper addition to any Lake District fortnight.
