Ling Hill

Ling Hill sits just outside Clitheroe, a proper fell rather than a mountain, but don't let that put you off. The walk up takes roughly forty minutes from the car park, climbing steadily through moorland with views that open out across the Ribble Valley the higher you go. On a clear day you can see all the way to Pendle Hill, which frankly makes the effort worthwhile.

It's not technical climbing - more of a steady trudge through heather and rough grass. The summit sits at about 1,300 feet, giving you genuine fell-walking without needing ropes or experience. Families with teenagers will find it manageable; younger kids might struggle with the loose ground on the descent if they're not confident walkers. The views are the thing here, not facilities - there's nothing at the top except the trig point and bracken.

Walkers get the most from Ling Hill. It's the kind of place you'd combine with other Pennine walks rather than visit in isolation. If you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Thornton Hall Country Park or Holgates Ribble Valley, it's worth a morning outing before heading into Clitheroe for lunch. Allow two hours return from the car park if you're taking it steady, less if you're fit.

Free to access - it's moorland with open access rights. Go midweek in summer if you want solitude, though honestly even at weekends it rarely feels crowded. The wind can be fierce up there, so pack layers.
