Ling Gill National Nature Reserve

The walk into Ling Gill itself is half the appeal. You're heading into proper limestone country near Settle, crossing moorland that opens up suddenly into a gorge - and that moment when the landscape drops away is genuinely striking. The gill is a wooded ravine carved by a stream, with vertical rock walls either side that feel properly dramatic for Yorkshire. In spring the vegetation is lush; autumn brings color. It's free and takes roughly an hour to walk the main section, though you can potter about for longer if the mood takes.

This isn't a stroll with handrails and interpretation boards. The path is uneven, occasionally boggy, and involves some scrambling over rocks. Parents with young children will find it demanding rather than gentle. Walkers and geology types will love it - the exposure of sedimentary rock is textbook Pennine limestone, and if you're into that sort of thing, you'll spend ages examining the strata.

Best visited in dry weather when the stream isn't in spate. The reserve sits well within a broader walking holiday around Ribblesdale - Philpin Farm Campsite and Ribblesdale Pods - Luxury Glamping are both close enough for a base, letting you explore the Three Peaks area without being reliant on staying in Settle itself. Allow a morning, grab a packed lunch, and don't expect crowds. It's the sort of place that rewards effort rather than offering instant gratification.
