Linden Church

St John the Baptist Church in Linden, just outside Swansea, is a proper medieval church that catches most visitors off guard. It's genuinely old - we're talking 14th century at the core - and walking in feels like stepping back several centuries without the tourist machinery.

The interior is spare but atmospheric. Weathered stone, narrow windows letting in pale Welsh light, and a handful of surviving monuments that actually tell you something about who lived here centuries ago. If you're into ecclesiastical architecture or early medieval stonework, you'll spend a good half-hour poking around. For casual visitors though, twenty minutes is realistic unless you're the type who reads every brass plaque.

It's free to visit, though opening hours aren't always guaranteed - best to check locally before heading out, or risk finding the door locked. The church works well as a quiet interlude if you're staying at one of the caravan parks nearby - Blackhills Leisure is just two miles away, making it an easy half-day excursion from a Swansea coast holiday.

Not a destination in itself, but if you're exploring the Gower Peninsula or basing yourself at Nicholaston Farm or Three Cliffs Bay, it's worth the short detour. Families with young children might find it dull unless they're already church enthusiasts, but it's exactly the sort of place where you remember Wales felt genuinely old.
