The former chalk pit near Saffron Walden has transformed into something worth a proper detour if you're camping locally. The paths aren't demanding, but they're muddy in places, so proper footwear matters.

You're looking at a couple of hours maximum, which makes it ideal as a morning jaunt before heading into Saffron Walden itself for lunch. The site works best for keen naturalists and walkers rather than families wanting a full day out - kids might find the lack of facilities and quiet trails a bit slow-going, though spotting wildlife keeps some entertained.

It's free to access, which is the main appeal. Spring brings the wildflowers and nesting birds; autumn offers decent fungi hunting if you're into that sort of thing.
