Leathercote wood

A proper woodland walk just outside Garstang, Leathercote Wood offers the kind of quiet forest ramble you can knock out in an afternoon without fuss. It's not dramatic - no waterfalls or viewpoint platforms here - but it's genuine Lancashire woodland with decent paths and enough cover to feel properly away from it all.

You're walking through mixed trees, mostly beech and oak, with the forest floor soft underfoot even weeks after rain. The paths are clear enough if you pay attention, and it's the sort of place where kids won't complain about getting bored after twenty minutes because there's actually stuff to spot - fallen logs to scramble over, mossy banks, the occasional deer if you're lucky and quiet about it.

Allow a couple of hours if you want to explore properly without rushing. This works well as a stop-off if you're basing yourself at one of the nearby caravan parks - Claylands is barely a mile away, making it a no-fuss morning activity. Bring waterproofs; woodland drains slowly around here and muddy patches are common even when the wider area looks dry.

It's not worth a special trip on its own, but if you're holidaying in the area, it's an easy detour that beats driving around looking for something to do. Free access, and genuinely peaceful on a weekday morning.
