Laverhay Height

The walk up Laverhay Height starts gently enough from the Moffat side, but don't be fooled - this is proper hill country, and the views across Dumfries and Galloway justify every huffing step. You're looking at roughly an hour and a half to reach the summit if you're moving steadily, maybe two if you're taking it easy or stopping for photos.

What makes this worthwhile is the landscape itself. From the top you get a sprawl of moorland and rolling hills that feels genuinely remote, even though you're not far from civilisation. On a clear day the visibility is excellent. The approach takes you through typical Southern Uplands terrain - open moorland with patches of rough grass and heather. It's windswept and exposed, so bring a jacket even when it looks mild from the car park.

This is one for walkers with a bit of fitness and anyone who wants the quieter side of Scottish hill walking. Families with young kids will struggle - it's a steady climb with not much to break up the walk itself. The views don't come with interpretation boards or facilities, just honest hillside.

Free to access, of course. The route starts near Moffat, a solid wee town that's got everything you need for supplies before heading out. If you're based at Moffat Camping and Caravanning Club Site just down the road, you've got yourself a proper day out sorted. Worth the detour if you're exploring the area properly, though it's not spectacular enough to justify a dedicated trip from elsewhere.
