Lathalmond Railway Museum

The old railway line through Fife still runs through Lathalmond, and the museum here is genuinely modest - no grand Victorian station, no sprawling collection of locomotives. What you get instead is a working snapshot of regional rail history, with volunteers who actually know their stuff and aren't afraid to show you bits of the network that most visitors skip entirely.

It's the sort of place where the appeal depends entirely on how deep your railway obsession runs. If you're after a quick family outing with rides and gift shops, you'll be disappointed. But if you've got a genuine interest in Scottish railway heritage, or you're travelling with someone who does, this beats a wet afternoon in Kinross by miles. The volunteers run it with real passion - they'll talk your ear off about the line's role in connecting Fife's mining communities, and they mean every word of it.

Allow a couple of hours if you're properly interested, less if you're just passing through. The site itself is compact and walkable, though there's nothing fancy in terms of facilities.

If you're camped at Meadow View Glamping or Green Oak Nature Retreat nearby - both excellent bases - this works as a half-day excursion before heading elsewhere in Fife.
