Lark Hill

The walk up Lark Hill from Greenfield is proper straightforward and rewards you with views that stretch across the Pennines on a clear day. It's not a slog - more of an afternoon amble really, taking you through moorland that shifts colour with the seasons. Spring brings heather and bilberry, autumn turns everything bronze and gold.

You'll spot the trig point at the summit if you're into that sort of thing, and on days when the weather plays ball, you can see right across to Winter Hill and beyond. It's the kind of walk that appeals to families with older kids and anyone after a decent leg-stretch without needing ropes and harnesses. A couple of hours there and back, depending on pace. The ground can be boggy after rain, so proper boots are a must.

If you're based at Dovestone Holiday Park nearby, this makes an excellent morning or early afternoon excursion before heading back for a late lunch. The park sits close enough that you won't waste half your day on the drive. There's something satisfying about bagging a peak this close to civilisation - you get genuine moorland and real views without disappearing into the back of beyond. The pub in Greenfield does a decent pint for afterwards too, which never goes amiss.
