Langstone stone circle

You'll find this modest Bronze Age circle tucked into moorland just outside Tavistock, and it's the sort of place that rewards getting lost on the way there. Eight stones still stand in a rough circle, weathered and moss-covered, roughly six metres across - proper atmospheric if you catch it on an overcast afternoon when the moor feels properly wild.

The walk out here is half the appeal. It's not difficult, but you do need to be prepared for muddy paths and Devon's variable weather. Bring OS maps or a decent phone signal because signposting is thin on the ground. Most people allow twenty minutes either side of parking plus thirty minutes at the site itself, though some visitors happily spend longer just sitting with the stones.

History buffs get the most from this one - Bronze Age circles always provoke questions about ceremony and community, and standing in the centre does give you a sense of intentionality that ground plans in museums never quite deliver. Younger children might find twenty minutes is plenty; there's nothing interactive here, just archaeology in its most authentic form.

It's absolutely free and you can turn up whenever the weather permits. The moorland setting makes it feel genuinely remote despite being only a few miles from Tavistock's shops and pubs. If you're based at Lydford Caravan & Camping Park, this makes a decent morning excursion to combine with a proper walk across the high moor. Spring and autumn offer the best light and fewest midges.
