Langdon Beck Plantation

A sprawling conifer plantation tucked into the North Pennines near Bishop Auckland, Langdon Beck is proper forest walking territory - the sort of place where you can lose a couple of hours wandering between stands of spruce and pine without seeing another soul. The trees are thick enough that even on a grey day it feels atmospheric rather than gloomy, and there's a genuine sense of being somewhere remote despite being only a handful of miles from civilisation.

It's ideal for walkers who want something low-key and woodland-focused without the crowds you'd get at better-known Lake District spots. Families with older kids will find it engaging enough - there's space to roam and the paths are generally manageable - though younger children might flag once the novelty of the trees wears off. History buffs won't find much here beyond the forest itself, which is fine if you're after a straightforward tramp rather than heritage commentary.

I'd allow two to three hours to do it properly rather than just bashing through in forty minutes. The canopy keeps things cool even on warm days, which is actually a bonus in summer. Go early if you can - the light's better in the morning, and you'll have the place to yourself.
