Lancaster Maritime Museum

Lancaster's waterfront tells the story of a port that once rivalled Liverpool. The Maritime Museum sits right on the quay, housed in a converted Victorian warehouse where you can actually walk among restored ships and see the tools of the trade that built this town's fortune. Inside, there are model ships, maps, and enough maritime paraphernalia to keep anyone interested in sailing history occupied for a good couple of hours.

It's proper worth doing if you've got even a passing interest in how Britain's coastal towns worked - the exhibits explain the slave trade, the packet ships, the fishing industry, all of it. Kids under ten might find it a bit dry unless they're genuinely fascinated by boats, but teenagers and adults get real value here. The location itself is the draw as much as the content: you're standing where merchants once haggled over cargo, and the nearby pubs and riverside walks make it part of something larger.

If you're based at Crook O'Lune Holiday Park or any of the nearby parks between Carnforth and Morecambe Bay, Lancaster is an easy run. Spend the morning at the museum, grab lunch by the water, then walk up to the castle on the hill if you fancy more. Free admission would be ideal but check ahead - some museums ask for a small donation. Allow two to three hours and don't rush it.
