Lancaster Castle

The castle rises from a rocky outcrop above Lancaster town centre, impossible to miss and genuinely commanding. Built by the Normans in 1177, it's seen everything - royal visits, witch trials, prisoner executions - and the stones still feel heavy with all that weight.

You can walk the curtain walls, climb the tower, and poke around the medieval keep. The courtyard's atmospheric, and on a clear day the views across Morecambe Bay are properly impressive. Most rooms are still used by the courts, so access is limited to certain areas, but what's open tells the story well enough. Allow two hours to do it properly - less if you're just after the views and a quick wander.

It's ideal for history buffs and anyone who finds themselves drawn to castles with actual stories attached rather than the polished heritage centre versions. Kids will get something from the towers and ramparts, though it's not packed with the interactive stuff younger children expect.

Bay View, a bit further out at 4.6 miles, is worth the drive on its own merits anyway. The town itself, Carnforth, is small but has a decent high street and a proper pub or two if you fancy lunch after.
