Knightshayes Gardens National Trust

The gardens at Knightshayes sprawl across 50 acres of proper horticultural excellence just outside Tiverton, and they're the sort of place that makes you actually want to slow down. Victorian hedges, woodland walks, winding paths through what feels like carefully orchestrated chaos - it's all here. The house itself is a Gothic revival affair that National Trust does so well, all turrets and red stone, but honestly the grounds steal the show.

You could easily spend two to three hours wandering without rushing. There's structure if you want it - formal gardens near the house - but also genuine wildness further out where the old estate melts into woodland. The kitchen garden works hard to look effortless, which is exactly how these things should operate. Children will cope fine if they've got some energy in them; it's not a petting zoo situation, but it rewards proper exploring.

As National Trust properties go, admission charges apply though members waltz straight through. Spring and early summer are cracking, when everything's actually growing rather than contemplating dormancy. It's tactile stuff - you want to touch the hedges, follow the woodland paths, sit by the pond and just exist for a bit. Working well with Nirvana Glamping nearby if you're basing yourself locally, though it's also a reasonable half-day detour if you're roaming around Devon. The real advantage here is that it doesn't feel tightly managed the way some Trust gardens do. There's room to breathe.
