Knapdale Forest Protected National Nature & Forest Reserve

Walking into Knapdale Forest feels like stepping into proper wild Scotland - all tall conifers, moss-covered ground, and the kind of silence that makes you realise how rarely you experience it. This is a protected nature reserve inland from the Kintyre Peninsula, spread across ancient woodland that's been managed for both conservation and forestry. You're here to walk, mostly. There are decent trails threading through the trees, ranging from short loops to longer rambles that take you deeper into the reserve. The real draw is the wildlife - red squirrels if you're lucky, golden eagles overhead, roe deer moving through the undergrowth. Birdwatchers get properly excited about this place.

History types will appreciate that you're walking through land that's been forested for centuries. It's not dramatically scenic in the postcard sense - no lochs or mountains framed perfectly - but there's something grounding about being surrounded by this much untouched woodland. The paths can get boggy, so decent boots are essential rather than optional.

Knapdale works best if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Lochgilphead Caravan Park or The Pod Over By are both within four miles and proper comfortable. You could easily spend a morning here, especially if you're the type who likes spotting birds and noting down species. Kids might find a couple of hours enough before getting restless; it's not the sort of place with facilities or attractions other than the walking itself. Late spring through early autumn is best - winter can be grim and muddy. Free to access, which is the way it should be.
