If you're based at Lepe Beach Campsite or Waverley Park Holiday Centre nearby, this makes a cracking alternative to a beach day when weather's dodgy. It's close enough for a half-day outing but far enough into genuine woodland that you feel you've properly escaped. Spring and early autumn are your best bets - summer can be thick with midges, and it gets muddy quick after rain.
