The forest itself isn't rare or special enough to justify a major detour from Macclesfield town, but if you're staying at one of the caravan parks dotted around the area - Kiss Wood Cabins is essentially on the doorstep, while Rudyard Vale or Sky View are just a few miles further on - it's worth knowing about as a morning's walk.

The location cuts through moorland country between Macclesfield and Leek, so it slots nicely into a broader exploration of the area. Bring decent boots in wet weather. Best visited October through April when the trees are bare or just budding - summer can feel a bit hemmed in by the foliage. It's the sort of quiet spot where you might see deer or woodpeckers if you're patient.
