About Kirkoswald Castle
It was built in the 12th century by the de Vaux family, which means it's genuinely old, but genuinely ruined too. There's a restored pele tower which gives you something substantial to look at - pele towers were built as defensive structures, squat and thick-walled, and this one's actually worth climbing if it's open. The views across the Eden valley are decent enough, especially on a clear day.
Historically minded adults will get more from this than families with young kids, unless your children are the sort who enjoy scrambling over medieval rubble. There's no café, no visitor centre, no facilities whatsoever. It's free to visit and you can turn up whenever you fancy.
The real use of Kirkoswald is as a stop-off during a wider Cumbrian trip. It's genuinely handy for the High Hall Farm Campsite and Drybeck Farm, both excellent bases if you're exploring the Eden Valley. Head here on a quiet morning between other activities - it doesn't demand much time or effort, but it's locally significant and the setting beside the river is genuinely lovely. Worth a twenty-minute detour, not worth a special journey.
