Kinsey Cave

The entrance to Kinsey Cave sits tucked into the limestone above Settle, Yorkshire, and it's worth the scramble up. This isn't a vast cathedral cavern - it's intimate, the kind of place where you have to mind your head on the rock ceiling and feel the weight of the landscape properly. The cave itself runs back about 50 metres into the hillside, with a stream running through it that's responsible for carving the whole thing out over millennia.

It's a proper adventure for families with older kids and anyone keen on geology or caving without the expense of a guided tour. The approach takes maybe twenty minutes from Settle on foot, which is doable but involves a bit of a scramble - not for very young children or anyone unsteady on slopes. Once inside, you can explore at your own pace and there's genuine atmosphere, the kind of damp-stone-and-water smell that makes you realise how alive these hills are.

No admission charge as far as we can tell, and you can spend anything from thirty minutes to an hour depending on how adventurous you feel. Go earlier in the day when the light's better for photography and crowds thinner. If you're based at The Dalesbridge Campsite or Orcaber Farm nearby, this makes a cracking morning outing before heading into Settle proper for lunch. The walk also connects to the wider limestone pavement scenery around the Settle area - well worth combining with a longer exploration of the valley.
