Kinder Scout

The gritstone plateau of Kinder Scout dominates the Hope Valley landscape - a proper fell that demands respect. At 636 metres, it's not particularly high by UK standards, but the moorland feels wild and vast in a way the numbers don't suggest.

Most people approach from Edale or Hayfield, both small villages that cling to the valley below. The walk itself is the thing here - you're not scrambling up a dramatic peak, but rather trudging across open moorland with extraordinary views north into Greater Manchester and south across the Dark Peak. The terrain is boggy, often ankle-deep in places, so proper boots are essential. Allow three to four hours for a solid circular walk.

Walkers will get far more from Kinder Scout than casual hikers. This is a place that rewards proper map-reading and good navigation. Families with older kids who can handle uneven ground will cope fine, but toddlers won't enjoy it. The payoff is genuine solitude on a clear day - you can see for miles, and there's a real sense of being up on something significant.

It's free to visit, of course, as it's open moorland. The nearest proper base is Castleton Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, five miles south, which sits perfectly for exploring the broader Peak District. Avoid weekends in summer if you value quiet. Spring and autumn are ideal - the light is better and the mud is manageable.
