Kinder Low

The walk up Kinder Low takes you to the highest point on the Kinder Scout plateau, and honestly, it's worth doing at least once. Starting from Edale or the Kinder Gates car park, you're looking at a proper slog uphill through moorland and gritstone - the ground underfoot is boggy in places, so waterproof boots aren't optional. Once you reach the summit trig point at 636 metres, the views open up across the Dark Peak to Mam Tor and beyond. On a clear day you can see for miles.

Walkers with decent fitness will get the most from this one. It's not technical climbing, but the 2-3 hour round trip through exposed moorland demands respect - weather changes fast up here, and the plateau can feel properly wild. Families with young kids might find it tough going; there's no genteel stroll to the top. But teenagers who've done a bit of hiking will find it exhilarating.

Free to visit, obviously. The nearby Castleton Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite sits just over five miles away in Hope Valley, making it a sensible base if you're doing a few days in the Peak. Combine this with Mam Tor or Stanage Edge if you've got the legs for it - this corner of Derbyshire rewards proper walking.

Go in spring or early autumn when the weather's more predictable. Summer crowds can be rammed on weekends.
