You'll find yourself among seriously tall Scots pine and Douglas fir the moment you step into Kilmichael Forest, just outside Lochgilphead. It's not a manicured country estate sort of place - this is a proper working forest where you can actually walk without feeling herded along a designated trail. The woodland floor is soft underfoot, covered in needles and moss, and the air does that thing it only does in old forests: feels genuinely different.

What you're doing here is straightforward: walking. Miles of it, in various directions, with enough tree cover that you won't roast on a warm day but enough breaks in the canopy that you don't feel trapped. The forest opens up occasionally to reveal views toward the Loch and surrounding hills - nothing dramatic, but the kind of thing that reminds you why you drove into Argyll in the first place. Wildlife watchers might spot red squirrels and roe deer if they're quiet and lucky.

This suits families after a solid couple of hours of tramping about, and walkers who've had their fill of overcrowded honeypot trails. Bring decent boots - it gets boggy in places after rain. There's no visitor centre or facilities, so plan accordingly.

If you're based at The Pod Over By just down the road, Kilmichael makes a proper morning walk before lunch. It's also a short drive from Lochgilphead Caravan Park if you want something more substantial nearby. Fair warning: it's not a walk for those after dramatic views or peak-bagging satisfaction. It's woodland, quietly done.
