Kilmahumaig, dun site

Clambering up to Kilmahumaig means leaving the car behind and committing to a proper walk across rough ground - which is exactly why most people miss it. This Iron Age dun site sits on high ground above Lochgilphead, and what you're looking at is the remains of a fortified settlement, basically a stone-walled fort that would have housed a local chief and his dependents around 2,000 years ago. The walls are still visible, though reduced to low humps and rubble in places, but standing there you get a genuine sense of why someone chose this spot - it's defensible, it overlooks the landscape, and on a clear day you can see across Argyll properly.

This isn't a place for a quick 20-minute stop. You'll need good boots, patience, and ideally some knowledge of Iron Age archaeology to make the most of it - casual visitors often find it underwhelming once they realise there's no interpretation board or obvious structure to photograph. Families with younger kids will get bored quickly; walkers and history types who enjoy piecing together the past will find it worthwhile. The walk itself is the real value here - crossing moorland and ancient landscape - rather than what's immediately on site.

Allow two hours including the walk. Go in summer when paths are drier and visibility better. It's free, obviously, being out on the hillside. If you're based at The Pod Over By or Lochgilphead Caravan Park nearby, it's a solid half-day excursion that beats another loop round Lochgilphead town.
