Kilbroney Standing Stone

A solitary slab of stone stands in farmland near Newry, unremarkable at first glance but genuinely striking once you realise what you're looking at. The Kilbroney Standing Stone has been here for roughly 4,000 years - Bronze Age folk put it up, and it's still going strong. It's the kind of thing you could walk straight past if you weren't paying attention, which is part of its appeal. No visitor centre, no gift shop, no crowds. Just stone and countryside.

This is one for archaeology enthusiasts or anyone who gets a proper kick out of actually touching something from prehistory. Kids can manage the short walk to it, though don't expect them to stand around long unless they're genuinely into ancient history. The whole visit takes maybe 20 minutes, depending on how contemplative you're feeling.

The site is free to access and accessible year-round, though you'll want decent weather and sturdy shoes - it's in working farmland and can get boggy. If you're staying at Kilbroney Caravan Park, it's basically on your doorstep, less than a mile away. Greenview Glamping and Oakwood up in the Mourne Mountains are further out but worth the drive if you're basing yourself there for a longer holiday. The Mourne foothills themselves offer proper walking, so you could string together a few days combining serious hiking with these quieter archaeological spots.
