Ancient oak and beech trees tower overhead in this proper woodland escape just outside Stoke-on-Trent. Key Wood stretches across rolling Staffordshire countryside, offering well-marked footpaths that wind through dense canopy and open glades where wildflowers bloom in spring.

Dog walkers absolutely love this place - there's enough space for energetic pups to roam freely while staying on the main trails. The terrain varies nicely, with gentle slopes that won't exhaust younger children but enough undulation to feel like you're getting proper exercise. Birdwatchers should bring binoculars; I spotted woodpeckers and nuthatches during my visit.

Allow at least an hour for a leisurely circuit, though you could easily spend a morning here if you're keen on nature photography or just fancy a longer ramble. The paths can get muddy after rain, so decent walking boots are wise.

Families staying at nearby sites like Secret Cloud House Holidays or Hales Hall will find this makes an excellent day out without the crowds of bigger attractions. It's the sort of woodland where kids can collect conkers in autumn or build den bases while parents actually relax. Free parking means you won't feel rushed, and it's close enough to several holiday parks to become your regular morning dog walk spot.
