Chained Oak

Local legend has it that an old woman once cursed the Earl of Shrewsbury after he refused her shelter, declaring that the ancient oak tree would be forever bound in chains and his family line doomed. The gnarled oak still stands today, wrapped in heavy iron chains that have become part of its very being over the centuries.

Walking the woodland path to reach this peculiar sight takes about twenty minutes from the nearest car park, winding through proper Staffordshire countryside near Stoke-on-Trent. The tree itself is quite something - massive, twisted, and undeniably eerie with those thick chains cutting into its bark.

Honestly, it's more atmospheric than spectacular. Ghost story enthusiasts and families with older children who fancy a bit of local folklore will get the most from it, though younger kids might find the walk tedious for what's essentially just one rather spooky tree. The surrounding woodland is lovely for a proper ramble, mind you.

If you're staying at one of the nearby sites like Lower Micklin Touring Park or Alton's Star Camping club, it makes for a decent afternoon walk when the weather's decent. Combine it with a visit to Alton Towers just down the road for a full day out. Free to visit, naturally, though parking might cost a few quid depending on where you leave the car.
