Wright's Rock

Standing about 20 feet tall in a field near Stoke-on-Trent, this sandstone pillar cuts a lonely figure against the Staffordshire sky. Wright's Rock is what geologists call a stack - a remnant of harder rock left behind when softer surrounding stone eroded away over millennia.

The rock itself isn't particularly spectacular, but there's something oddly compelling about its solitary presence. Local legend has it that the Wright family used it as a meeting point for boundary disputes, though the stories vary depending on who's telling them. What's certain is that it's been a landmark for centuries, visible from quite a distance across the surrounding farmland.

Walkers and geology enthusiasts get the most from a visit here. It's not really a destination in itself - more of an interesting waypoint if you're exploring the countryside between Stoke and the Staffordshire Moorlands. The rock sits on private land, so access depends on the landowner's goodwill and existing footpaths.

For families staying at nearby sites like Quarry Walk Park or Alton's Star Camping and Caravanning Club Site, it makes a decent short walk if you're in the area. Don't expect facilities or interpretation boards though. This is very much a 'what you see is what you get' sort of place. Allow 15 minutes unless you're particularly taken with ancient geology.
