Jubilee Queen

Standing on the edge of Calne, the Jubilee Queen is a modest but oddly compelling landmark - a white horse carved into the chalk hillside, though considerably less famous than its neighbour at Westbury. This one celebrates Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee back in 1897, which gives it a specific place in the local story, even if fewer tourists make the pilgrimage to see it.

It's a straightforward walk from town, and the real appeal is less about the horse itself - which is smaller and less photogenic than you might hope - and more about the excuse to get up onto the downs. The views back towards Calne are proper countryside; rolling fields and the working landscape that makes this corner of Wiltshire worth visiting at all. The walk clears your head, takes about 45 minutes there and back, and costs nothing.

Walkers will get the most from it, really. History enthusiasts might enjoy the Victorian angle, though there's precious little interpretation on site. Families with young kids might find the walk a bit too long for the payoff - though if you're staying at Piccadilly Caravan Park or The Retreat Glamping, both within six miles, it's an easy afternoon activity without spending money.

Go when the chalk is dry. After rain, the path gets slippery and the whole outing becomes less pleasant. It's not a destination in itself, but it works as part of a wider Calne walk - combine it with the town's industrial heritage and a decent pub lunch, and you've got a proper half-day sorted.
