Jeppe Knave Grave

Out on the moorland east of Clitheroe sits a low stone cairn that's easy to walk straight past if you're not paying attention. This is Jeppe Knave Grave, a Bronze Age burial mound that's been here for roughly 4,000 years, and it's the sort of place that rewards a bit of detective work. The site itself is modest - a rocky pile in open countryside with views across Pendle Hill - but standing there you're literally standing on top of someone's ancient grave. That hits differently than reading about prehistory in a museum.

History enthusiasts will get more from a visit than casual walkers, though the location works either way. There's no visitor infrastructure to speak of, which means no crowds and no faffing about with car parks or admission fees. It's genuinely free and open access, though you'll need to be comfortable with rough moorland terrain. Half an hour is plenty of time once you've found it - bring an OS map or decent phone navigation because it's not signposted.

The Ribble Valley around Clitheroe has serious archaeology running through it - Bronze Age stuff, medieval history, the whole lot. Jeppe Knave works best as part of a wider moorland day rather than a standalone trip, but if you're into archaeology and landscape, it's worth the detour.
